Dr Karen Darke MBE

Dr Karen Darke MBE is The 3H Foundation Patron.

Karen started out as a geologist researching gold in the Bolivian Andes, but after a life-changing climbing accident left her paralysed, Karen looked for different outside adventures.

After trying different sports and outside pursuits, Karen started to compete in hand-cycling and went on to win Paralympic gold in the sport of Paralympic hand-cycling in Rio 2016.

It was the 79th medal for Britain, and 79 being the elemental number for Gold led to Karen creating Quest 79: Find Your Inner Gold.

The Quest involves Karen cycling 7 continents in 9 iconic rides, raising £79K for Spinal Injuries and encouraging people to step out of their comfort zones and discover passion, purpose or ability: their ‘inner gold’.

Karen is completing ‘The Cold Way’ challenge in January 2022 with a journey across Antarctica to plant a flag at
79 degrees latitude and 79 degrees longitude,a new pole – The Pole of Possibility!
